English

At Oxley, a love of high-quality books sits at the heart of our English curriculum. We carefully select exciting and engaging texts that become the focus of our Novel Studies. By exploring a book in depth over a longerperiod, children have time to become fully immersed in its characters, themes and language. This helps them develop a genuine enjoyment of reading while inspiring them to write confidently for a range of purposes and audiences.

Our English lessons give children plenty of opportunities to talk, share ideas, ask thoughtful questions and explore an author’s choice of words and sentences. Alongside developing creativity and imagination, we carefully teach the essential skills of reading, writing, spelling, grammar and communication so that every child can grow into a confident reader, writer and speaker.

We want your child to develop a rich vocabulary, a secure understanding of grammar and the ability to apply spelling patterns and rules independently. We also encourage every pupil to take pride in their work, developing clear, fluent and joined handwriting by the time they leave Oxley for secondary school.

From the Early Years Foundation Stage through to Year 6, children enjoy a wonderful range of picture books, novels, traditional and modern poetry, and texts that reflect different cultures, experiences and viewpoints. These texts help children to become curious, thoughtful and empathetic. Reading, writing and oracy are also woven throughout our wider curriculum, giving children meaningful opportunities to use their English skills through scientific enquiries, debates, speeches and non-fiction writing.
