Music: A skill for life

At Oxley, we believe music is an important part of every child’s development and something they can enjoy throughout their life. Learning music develops creativity, confidence and self-expression, alongside physical coordination, listening and the mathematical skills involved in recognising rhythm, pattern and pulse.
Bringing music to life
Our music curriculum is designed to engage and inspire your child through a wide range of enjoyable experiences. Children are given regular opportunities to:
- Sing – developing their voices and enjoying music from different genres, cultures and traditions.
- Compose – experimenting with sounds and creating their own musical ideas.
- Perform – playing and singing for others, both individually and as part of a group.
- Listen and appraise – responding thoughtfully to music and developing an appreciation of different styles.
Developing skills beyond music
Playing and performing with others helps children learn how to cooperate, listen carefully and support one another. It also develops important qualities such as self-discipline, resilience and commitment. These valuable skills support children across the curriculum and will continue to benefit them beyond their time at Oxley.
Music for every child
We want every child to feel included, successful and able to enjoy music, regardless of their ability or individual needs. Lessons are carefully adapted so that all pupils can participate, make progress and experience the joy of creating and performing music.
Wider musical opportunities
Through our partnerships with specialist music providers, your child may have the opportunity to learn an instrument, including woodwind, keyboard, brass or strings. We are also able to offer bursary support where financial circumstances might otherwise prevent a child from taking part.
Throughout the school year, children can enjoy a variety of additional musical experiences, performances and opportunities to share their talents with others.
Our aim is for every child to leave Oxley with happy musical memories, greater confidence and a lasting appreciation and love of music.
