Elephants

Welcome to Year 2 and our wonderful Elephants class! This is a very special year as children enjoy their final chapter in Key Stage 1, growing in confidence, independence and maturity as they prepare for the exciting adventures of Key Stage 2. We encourage every Elephant to be curious, enthusiastic and proud of their achievements, developing the skills and positive attitudes that will help them become successful learners.
Our curriculum is packed with exciting discoveries and opportunities to explore the world around us. In History, children begin by reflecting on their own lives and how they are making history, before investigating how toys have changed over time. Later in the year, we take to the skies to discover the fascinating story of how humans learnt to fly! Our Geography lessons encourage children to become young explorers as we investigate our local surroundings, discover the different weather patterns across the UK and explore the wonderful features of our coastline.
Science brings plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning, investigation and discovery. Children explore the human body, investigate different materials and observe the changing seasons throughout the year. We also develop our green fingers through planting and growing activities, learn about different animals and discover how we can help care for our planet. We encourage children to ask questions, make predictions and develop their understanding through practical experiences.
Creativity is a big part of life in Elephants! In Art, children experiment with spirals and drawing techniques, explore simple printmaking and use their imagination to create beautiful bird-inspired artwork. Our Product Design projects provide exciting opportunities to make electrical wobble bots, investigate gears and pulleys, and put our engineering skills to the test by designing and building bridges. In Computing, children develop their problem-solving skills through programming Bee-Bots, creating code and exploring how information can be organised and used.
Music fills our classroom with rhythm and excitement as children explore pulse, develop their singing voices and enjoy opportunities to play instruments. PE also offers plenty of opportunities to get moving, with gymnastics, dance, yoga, athletics and a range of exciting games helping children develop coordination, teamwork and confidence.
Alongside our academic learning, we place great importance on helping children become kind, thoughtful and responsible individuals. Through PSHE, children learn how to build positive friendships, recognise their feelings, stay safe and make sensible choices both online and in everyday life. Our World Cultures and Beliefs lessons introduce children to Christianity and Islam, encouraging them to appreciate different beliefs and understand the importance of caring for others and the world around them.
Reading remains one of the most treasured parts of our day. We love sharing wonderful stories, discovering exciting characters and exploring books that spark our imagination. Through daily reading opportunities, phonics and engaging English lessons, children continue to develop their fluency, comprehension and confidence as readers and writers. Our special class story time gives everyone the chance to relax, listen and enjoy the magic of a good book together.
Just like elephants, we aim to be caring, determined, loyal and strong. We look after one another, work together and celebrate every success, however big or small. Our Oxley values of ‘Be Kind’, ‘Be Brilliant’ and ‘Have an I can attitude’ are at the heart of our classroom, helping children develop resilience, independence and the confidence to tackle new challenges.
Above all, we want every Elephant to feel happy, valued and excited about learning. By the end of Year 2, we hope our children will look back with pride at everything they have achieved and feel ready to take their next big steps into Key Stage 2.
